For several years St Thomas’ has welcomed hundreds of families into church as our contribution to the Always Ashton Halloween trail. Unfortunately we can’t do that this year due the Coronavirus restrictions. Instead we hope this resource will help families to enjoy this time safely together. You’ll find sheets to colour, videos to watch, crafts to try, a maze to solve and a word search.

If you complete any of the activities then please send in pictures to light.world@stthomasstluke.org.uk and we will share them on our Facebook page. You might also want to put them in your window for other people to see.

What’s in the name?

For hundreds of years Christians have celebrated the Feast of All Saints on November 1st. Originally it was called the Feast of All Hallows which means all Holy People. October 31st was therefore called All Hallows Eve which was later shortened to Halloween.

This video explains how Jesus  has conquered the forces of darkness.

What’s so cool about Light?

  • Light helps you to see the beautiful things in the world.
  • Light helps you to keep safe.
  • Light helps you to see which way to go.
  • Light helps you to see in very dark places.

The Light of the World

Jesus is the son of God. People who follow Jesus are called Christians. Jesus is also called the Light of the World because he helps you to see things. He helps you to keep safe and to go the right way.

Walk in the Light Game

Let’s see how well you can walk in the light. To play, go into a dark room or outside then get a grown-up to shine a torch on the floor and move it around at random. Children must try to step on the light while it moves and try to stay in the light at all times.

Paper Lanterns

  1. Choose a piece of coloured paper or decorate a white piece.
  2. Fold the paper in half, length-ways.
  3. Next make snips 3/4 of the way across towards the outside edge, all the way down, using scissors.
  4. Write Jesus is the light of the World along the top or bottom.
  5. Decorate with stars or glitter.
  6. Then open the paper out again and bend it around to form a lantern shape.
  7. Stick the paper where it overlaps using glue, staples or tape.
  8. Make a handle and attach to the top.

Christian Pumpkin Windsock

You will need:

  • 2 thick paper plates or card cut into circles using plate as guide.
  • Orange paint
  • Felt pens
  • Coloured paper or white paper coloured with felt pens
  • Orange, yellow, and green crepe paper or tissue paper
  • Paintbrush
  • Tape
  • Stapler and a small piece of ribbon
  1. Paint the paper plates orange
  2.  Cut out 2 cross eyes, a nose, and mouth from the yellow paper.  Cut out a brown stem and green leaf.
  3. Attach the pieces to the front and top of the plate using the tape (or you can use glue!).
  4. Add several pieces of streamer to the bottom of the plate and then bring the two plates together with several staples.
